Koh Samui has developed rapidly over the last few years, so it has inevitably been in line with the building trends that have been popular. One of those trends is for Condominiums.
Condominiums have become popular amongst the developers, as they have had an insight in to how the market will go. The reason for this has been the legal requirements for foreigners to own land. This is explained in more detail elsewhere on the site. Suffice to say that condominiums can be fully and legally owned by foreign nationals without much of the red tape and company set-up required for land and house for instance. Obviously this has resulted in a high demand, which as mentioned was spotted early by developers. Hence there are many of the condominiums available or being built. The rule is basically that as long as the majority of the condos are Thai owned, then all the others can be bought by foreigners. Normally Thailand doesn’t tend to make things quite this easy.
As a result many studio apartments have been built. It is a natural way to build in Thailand and it also means that condo developments can have high rental returns, as they are often run by hotel chains, who will rent out the room when not in use by the owner. They are usually built to very high specifications and offer an excellent investment opportunity for anyone, what ever their budget may be.
